Architectural and Archaeological Reserve “Old Sozopol”

The Architectural and Archaeological Reserve “Old Sozopol” is the heart and soul of the town—a place where history, the sea, and culture intertwine in a truly unique way. Located on a small rocky peninsula, the Old Town impresses visitors with over 2,500 years of history and is considered one of the most valuable cultural and historical sites along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Sozopol was founded in 611 BC by Greek colonists under the name Apollonia Pontica and quickly developed into an important commercial and cultural center. Today, a walk through the reserve reveals traces of different historical periods—Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Bulgarian National Revival. Visitors can see preserved fortress walls, archaeological remains, churches, and traditional Revival-era houses built of stone and wood, featuring characteristic bay windows and authentic Black Sea architecture.

The cobblestone streets lead to small squares, art galleries, ethnographic museums, and craft workshops. Among the most notable landmarks are the South Fortress Wall with its panoramic sea views, the churches of St. George and Sts. Cyril and Methodius, as well as the Archaeological Museum, which houses valuable artifacts from ancient Apollonia Pontica.

Old Sozopol is also a vibrant cultural center, hosting festivals, exhibitions, and events throughout the year, including the renowned “Apollonia” Arts Festival, which brings together artists from across the country. The atmosphere is especially romantic and peaceful in the late afternoon and evening, when the sunset over the sea turns the Old Town into a natural stage.

We highly recommend the Architectural and Archaeological Reserve “Old Sozopol” to all our guests who wish to enrich their stay with cultural experiences, history, and authentic atmosphere. It is a place that is not just visited, but truly remembered—perfect for leisurely walks, photography, romantic evenings, and discovering the true spirit of Sozopol.
